First Nations Totem Pole Alert Bay British Columbia
Photo & Vacation Spot

Among the many activities available in the First Nations village of Alert Bay, a visit to the Totem Pole park along the waterfront of the town on Cormorant Island, British Columbia is a must.

In a form of expression, the First Nations people create art pieces such as head-dresses, blankets, and woodwork such as totem poles, rattles, and masks - just to name a few.

Many of the First Nations carvings are the artists impression of animals, their landscape, and mythical beings. Alert Bay is also home to the world's tallest totem pole which stands at a height of 52 metres (173 feet). The carvings were created by several artists and they represent the various tribes of the Kwakwaka'wakw First Nations. The Thunderbird and Copper totem pole was created by First Nations artist Bruce Alfred.
